The Heifetz 25-Year Advent Calendar

Day 20: 2019 - The Double Bass Showcase
Welcome to December! For our final-month celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Heifetz Institute, we’ll be sharing audio, video, images, and programs from across the decades of the Institute. Check back each day from Dec. 1 – Dec. 25 as we share some memorable moments from each golden year of the Institute!

August 8, 2019: Staunton, VA

When we think of the summer of 2019 here at the Heifetz Institute, one of memories sure to bring a smile is of the simultaneous seriousness of purpose, and lightness of being of our first-ever Double Bass Studio.  Under the guidance of our remarkable new faculty member Sam Suggs, we welcomed the first four bassists in Heifetz history to our campus….and even put together our first-ever “Double Bass Showcase” to display their talents.  Bringing in the bottom end of the string family and “rounding out the sound” was warmly welcomed by the rest of our student body, as you’ll witness in today’s double-entry of doublebass chamber-music performances.

Starting off with the charming contingent of violinist Angela Sin Ying Chan,  violist Zhen Huang, cellist Zhihao Wu, bassist Jesse Lu, and pianist Rohan DeSilva exploring the insouciant charm of the fourth movement of Schubert’s “Trout” Quintet – the movement that gives the piece its name.

Followed immediately afterwards by another wonderful – if far less known – Piano Quintet by English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams.  #Heifetz2019 students Eliane Menzel (violin); Mikel Rollet, (viola), Alex Fowler (cello), and Alexis Schulte-Albert (bass) join faculty pianist Zhenni Li-Cohen to play the first movement of RVW’s Piano Quintet in C Minor. Check it out!

PS: You can also see the entire #Heifetz2019 student roster here, and the 2019 Heifetz Memory book here.
