Ivan Chan

Violinist Ivan Chan is professor at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and Shanghai University School of Music. As a visiting artist, Mr. Chan has taught at the Curtis Institute of Music, Juilliard School, New England Conservatory, Cleveland Institute of Music, Ravinia’s Steans Music Institute,Meadowmount School of Music, Western Michigan University, Central Conservatory of Music, Shanghai Conservatory of Music, University of Missouri-Kansas City, Encore School for Strings, Heartland Chamber Music Festival, Morningside Music Bridge, Music@Menlo Chamber Music Institute, New York String Orchestra Seminar, Heifetz International Music Institute and Kent Blossom Music Festival.

Top prize winner of the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis, Julius Stulberg, Ima Hogg and Washington International Competition, Ivan Chan has appeared as soloist with orchestras including the Detroit Symphony, Indianapolis Symphony, Hong Kong Philharmonic, Concerto Soloists of Philadelphia, New World Symphony, Houston Symphony and the Hong Kong Sinfonietta. As a chamber musician, he toured regularly with “Musicians from Marlboro” and has collaborated with artists such as Jaime Laredo, Sharon Robinson, David Finckel, Wu Han, Gil Shaham, Ida Kavafian, Pamela Frank, Cho-Liang Lin, Robert Chen, Steven Tenenbom, Hsin-Yun Huang and with members from ensembles including the Guarneri, Orion, Cleveland, Emerson, Borromeo, Johannes String Quartets, Beaux Art Trio, TASHI and Lincoln Center Chamber Music Society. 

As an adjudicator, Mr. Chan had the privilege to serve on the panels of the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis, Alice and Eleonore Schoenfeld International String Competition, Stulberg International String Competition and New World Symphony Concerto Competition.

From 1995 to 2010, Mr. Chan was first violinist of the acclaimed Miami String Quartet. Winner of Chamber Music America’s prestigious Cleveland Quartet Award, the Miami Quartet appeared regularly on premier series and festivals throughout the United States such as Lincoln Center Chamber Music Society, Philadelphia Chamber Music Society, Cleveland Chamber Music Society, as well as Santa Fe, La Jolla, Music@Menlo, Angel Fire, and Kent Blossom music festivals among others. The Miami Quartet was featured on prominent radio programs including National Public Radio’s “St. Paul Sunday Morning” and “Performance Today”. Mr.Chan’s performances with the Miami Quartet can be heard on recordings under the BMG/Conifer, CRI labels and Music Heritage labels.
