A Fitting Grand Finale – With a Borromeo (and Bass) Boost!
View All Heifetz Videos of the Week

Here it is, the end of January. A time when we not only celebrate the Jan. 31 birthday of the incomparable composer Franz Schubert – he of the the searing string quartets and superb symphonies – but also anxiously anticipate the end of our application period, with hopes that our most promising potential students don’t suffer the same fate as Schubert by leaving some of their greatest work unfinished.

In Franz’ case, it was his two-movement Symphony No. 8, forever after immortalized as the “Unifinished,” after Schubert gave up on writing the final two movements. For our class of #Heifetz2020, it’s the dread of the Unfinished Application.…abandoning the opportunity to experience a transformative Heifetz summer in the Shenandoah Valley. Which suggests another Schubert symphony… the Tragic!

Franz Schubert, genius at work…until it came to his “Unfinished” Symphony!

So we thought we’d share another inspiring Schubert masterpiece on a symphonic scale both to celebrate…and anticipate! Every year, our Grand Finale performance features the overwhelming sight and sound of The Heifetz Band – our entire student body playing together for the first and only time. For #Heifetz2019, that tradition got both a “bass and Borromeo boost,” as this spine-tingling performance of the last movement of Schubert’s “Death and the Maiden” quartet was led by violinist and Artistic Director Nicholas Kitchen with his fellow Borromeo Quartet members Kristopher Tong, violin; Mai Motobuchi, viola; Yeesun Kim, cello; and our first-time faculty double bass teacher Samuel Suggs. Relive the performance – and look below for the complete roster of performers!
