The Heifetz 25-Year Advent Calendar

Day 5: 2007 - "Love in War:" Beiliang Zhu plays Chopin

Welcome to December! For our final-month celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Heifetz Institute, we’ll be sharing audio, video, images, and programs from across the decades of the Institute. Check back each day from Dec. 1 – Dec. 25 as we share some memorable moments from each golden year of the Institute!

July 25, 2007: Wolfeboro, NH

From the moment she stepped on campus, everyone around her recognized that cellist Beiliang Zhu was a unique talent.  Not only was the Shanghai native an especially gifted player, she also possessed a thoughtful and compelling charm that invariably caused audiences to lean in to her performances.  Beiliang spent three summers as a student while the Institute was based at Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, NH, before going on to such great things as being the first ever to take the top prize at the prestigious Leipzig International Bach Festival, and eventually returning to the Heifetz Institute as an Artist in Residence and teacher, offering some truly stunning Bach performances along the way.

As you’ll hear in her introduction to a 2007 Stars of Tomorrow performance in Wolfeboro, Beiliang and pianist John Chernoff had to resolve some profoundly different interpretations of the meaning behind Frydryk Chopin’s deeply felt Cello Sonata in G minor, Op. 65.  Enjoy – and afterwards, check out another one of Beiliang’s brilliant Bach performances from a more recent Heifetz summer here!
