The Heifetz 25-Year Advent Calendar

Day 2: 2020 - Schubert, Somewhere between Seoul and the Straits of Taiwan

Welcome to December! For our final-month celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Heifetz Institute, we’ll be sharing audio, video, images, and programs from across the decades of the Institute. Check back each day from Dec. 1 – Dec. 25 as we share some memorable moments from each golden year of the Institute!

July 30, 2020: Wandan Township, Taiwan –  Seoul, South Korea

Our quarter-century journey down our musical memory lane has a more recent stop in today’s posting, but it will long stand out as the most unprecedented summer in Heifetz history.  While we were all separated by miles, oceans, and even continents, someway and somehow our students, faculty, and staff came together to create a Virtual Institute of learning, listening, and some superb music-making. More than 1,400 hours of scheduled lessons, studio classes, chamber coachings, and recording sessions yielded no fewer than 148 fresh performances by our #VirtualHeifetz2020, who overcame the difficulties and the distances to create some truly artistic and meaningful musical realizations.  As just one example, listen here to the wonderful and sensitive interplay between 19-year old Taiwanese cellist En-Chun (Eugene) Lin, and our Seoul, South Korea-based faculty pianist Seonmi Lee in the timeless first movement of Franz Schubert’s “Arpeggione” Sonata.

See the complete roster of all 100 #VirtualHeifetz2020 students here.

100 students + 40 faculty + 25 staff +14 countries + 9 time zones. = 49 full-length concerts!  View the whole report about the remarkable 2020 Heifetz Virtual Institute.

Fast Away The Old Year Passes!  The Heifetz Institute has been in the business of helping brilliant young talents blossom for 25 years now, the last two of which have required us to work even harder, smarter, and better to pursue our trailblazing mission. As you consider your year-end giving, please consider supporting our mission to enable the world’s most promising young musical talents to realize their artistic and communicative potential.
