On This Day: July 1, 2016

A Romance for Downtown Staunton

Welcome to Heifetz 2026!  This summer, as we celebrate three decades of transformative education, extraordinary artistry, and the community that has made Heifetz possible, each day we’ll be sharing audio, video, images, and programs from across the decades of the Institute. Check back each day throughout our 30th Anniversary Season as we share some memorable moments from each golden year of the Institute!

July 1, 2016: Sunspots Pavilion, Staunton, VA

It may have been an outdoor performance – the July 16, 2016 “Opening Concert & Convocation” at Sunspots Pavilion in downtown Staunton, VA – but you could’ve heard a pin drop as violinist Rachell Ellen Wong and pianist Carlos Avila performed the Romance, Op. 23, by Amy Marcy Cheney Beach – a piece that originally premiered outdoors at the Chicago World’s Fair in 1896 – as you will hear Rachell explain!

Rachell, a 2020 Avery Fisher Prize winner and two-time Heifetz alum and tour veteran, will be returning to Staunton as a special guest during our 30th Anniversary season!
