Heifetz institute alumna (2014 & 2016) and 2015 and 2017 Artist-in-Residence Ji-Won Song is a native of Seoul, South Korea, and has performed on stages worldwide, delighting audiences with her energetic and engaging performances that express her refined perspectives on melody, color and harmony, as well as her deep passion for her instrument. A versatile soloist and chamber musician, she is sought after for her creative approach, vivid sound, and multi-faceted interpretations of classical and contemporary repertoire.
In November of 2017, Ms. Song won first prize and the special prize in the Isang Yun International Violin Competition in Tongyeong, Korea, one of that nation’s top instrumental competitions. Along with a large purse, Ms. Song will perform in recital in Seoul’s Kumho Art Hall in August 2018.
In December of 2017, right after performing on a live radio broadcast of MIdday Masterpieces on New York City’s WQXR. she joined the “Heifetz Holiday Tour,” offering performances in Staunton, Northern Virginia, Washington, DC, and Baltimore, MD. In January engagements with the Israel Chamber Project in Paul Hall, New York City, and will offer a solo recital at the Juilliard School in May of 2018. Next fall, she travels to Bucheon, Korea, to solo with the Bucheon Philharmonic Orchestra.
Among the renowned international orchestras with which Ms. Song has soloed are The Philadelphia Orchestra, Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, and Shanghai Symphony Orchestra. Conductors with whom she has collaborated include Rossen Milanov, Augustin Dumay and Nanse Gum. Venues at which she has appeared include Washington DC’s Kennedy Center, Philadelphia’s Kimmel Center, Shanghai Symphony Hall, Seoul Arts Center, Boston’s Jordan Hall, and Augsburg’s (Germany) Golden Hall.
Ji-Won began her musical studies at age five and studied in the pre-college division of the Korean National University of the Arts. After moving to the U.S., Ji-Won studied violin with longtime Heifetz Institute faculty member David Cerone., and performed at the Kennedy Center at the age of 12. She served as concertmaster in the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra and graduated from the Young Artist Youth Program of the Cleveland Institute. After studies with Ida Kavafian and Heifetz Institute faculty member Shmuel Ashkenasi at the Curtis Institute, and with Donald Weilerstein and Soovin Kim at the New England Conservatory, Ms. Song is currently enrolled in the prestigious Artist Diploma program at The Julliard School, where she studies with distinguished violinists Donald Weilerstein and Ida Kavafian. Ji-Won plays on a Montagnana provided by the KumhoAsiana Cultural Foundation.
