Chamber Music Seminar
The Heifetz Chamber Music Seminar will take place at the Heifetz Institute from June 24 – August 7, 2022
The Heifetz Institute Chamber Music Seminar is a program of intense and highly focused study of masterworks of chamber music literature with some of the most renowned instructors in the world of chamber music. Individual artists, as well as pre-formed string quartets and piano trios, preparing for professional careers are encouraged to apply.
About the Seminar
• Limited to 12 participants, who will receive full scholarships and be recognized as Heifetz Chamber Music Fellows
• Open to Senior Division applicants only (suggested ages 18—30)
• Three 80-minute chamber coachings per week
• Two private lessons per week: one with an assigned studio teacher, and one with a Chamber Music Seminar instructor.
•Three matinee concerts will be dedicated exclusively to complete performances of assigned repertoire by Heifetz Chamber Music Seminar students.
• Other performance opportunities available on an approved basis
• Participation in all other programs and activities of the summer program
Chamber Music Seminar Faculty
Audition Process & Guidelines
To be considered for a Chamber Music Fellowship (which provides tuition-free enrollment), applicants must submit the following:
1. One movement of Bach from the Sonatas and Partitas or the Cello Suites BWV 1001-1012. For a pianist in a group, the Bach requirement should be one Prelude and Fugue from the WTC Book I or II)
2. One virtuoso work for solo instrument or with piano accompaniment
3. One significant Concerto movement (see Viola specifications in main Summer Program > Audition Requirements)
4. A work reflecting some important part of the applicant’s identity as a chamber music artist (note -this may or may not be chamber music). This could be a work by a traditional composer who occupies a particularly important part of the applicant’s artistic identity, or might be a work by a lesser-known or less-represented composer that has been important to the applicant’s artistry. These recordings can include chamber music collaborators, but the applicant does not have to submit a chamber music recording; merely something that shows the applicant’s aptitude related to chamber music. An additional option is for the applicant to learn and record a work by the Composer-in-Residence at Heifetz 2022 – Adolphus Hailstork (we will supply the music for the applicant to learn and record).
For an ensemble to apply for Chamber Music Fellowships, they must submit AS A GROUP:
Three contrasting movements
- One by Haydn, Mozart or early Beethoven
- One from what may be called the Romantic period (middle Beethoven through Debussy and Ravel)
- One from the modern era Bartók and Shostakovich to the present
*If the group is not accepted but the individuals still wish to be considered, they must submit the requirements for the Senior Division.
